Introductory Courses
The Studio offers a basic curriculum to introduce students to the acting process. Each course offers work in improvisation, movement, scene and monologue work, and ensemble building. As students advance in acting skills, they learn to take risks, to work comfortably within a group, to concentrate and think on their feet. They develop skills of self-expression, awareness, and “being in the moment.” The maximum class size is 15 students.

Introduction to Dance for Actors: No previous experience needed for this fun introduction to dance! This course introduces students to basic dance technique, emphasizing foundations of creative movement, modern and jazz dancing. Students will grow in body awareness, strength, flexibility, and coordination as they learn basic dance vocabulary, weekly combinations, and choreograph their own dances. A full year course. Cost: $420 ($300 if taken as a second course)

Improvisation
Aesop’s Improv: Using techniques of story theatre, students will create pieces based on the well-loved Aesop’s fables. They will select fables that have meaning for them and set them in improv pieces relating to their own lives. They will gain experience in creating a range of characters, both fabled and realistic, and develop movement and ensemble skills. Cost: $600 Aesop’s Improv for ages 10-15 Thursdays, 5:30–7 PM, Beg. Intermediate Comedy Improv: Students will hone their improvisational skills through in depth work on creating exciting characters and relationships that can be sustained over time. In this class students will be challenged to build the foundations of scenes rather than going for the easy laugh. This class will provide a solid base of skills for students who wish to pursue work in advanced comedy. Intermediate Comedy Improv for ages 14-18 Thursdays, 5:30-7PM, Beg. Improv Technique: Through exercises and games, students will build spontaneity, listening skills and physical comedy. Students will explore scene work, group games, comedy improv and comic scenarios. Improvisation helps students to be more expressive, to use the body, intellect and voice more fully when reacting to the stimuli of a scene. Advanced Comedy Improv Troupe: Students will develop an ensemble approach to improvised comedy scenes, with an emphasis on long form improv and character development. Ensemble
21St Century Theatre: This class will focus on cutting edge contemporary acting methods and techniques, and students will create dynamic and physical interpretations of new and exciting material. They will learn the philosophies of such teachers and directors as Anne Bogart, Tadashi Suzuki, and Jaques LaCoq who have made a major impact on the contemporary theatre world as well as studying and performing the writings of new playwrights such as Charles Mee, Sarah Ruhl, and Mac Wellman. Students will gain a strong understanding of what is happening in the world of theatre right now and how they can make an impact in it. Cost $600. 21st Century Theatre Ages 15-18 Mondays 4-6PM beg. Sept. 8, 2008 Instructor: Dan Morbyrne (Barnes) Inside Out: Through improvisation, story theatre, writing, and scene work, students will develop monologs and scenes using material and stories from their own lives. The class will learn how to create a range of characters, interact in a performance ensemble, and further refine acting and movement skills. Intermediate Choreography Workshop (ICW) An intensive workshop class for dancers wishing more experience with choreography. Students will focus on developing solo and small group dance pieces, working one on one with the instructor to develop the work, using choreographic principles, music, poetry, lighting, and...who knows? Open only to those who have completed three years of IDA and one year of acting courses. Must be taken with IDA or permission of the instructor. Cost $600 ($480 if taken with another course). Scene Study and Continuing Acting
Character Work: Through creating and exploring different character forms, students will advance in acting skills, build scene study techniques, and gain improv experience. This course will allow students to zero in on their character work, and have the fun of creating a wide range of characters, from realistic to stylized. Through improv, monologs, stories, scenes, fantasy, and theatre games, students will have the challenge of fully investing in the characters they create and bring to life. Cost $600

Scene Study: With material drawn from contemporary scripts, monologs, favorite books, and improvisation, students learn how to approach a script, how to stage a scene, and how to bring a character to life. Students explore subtext, motivation, and relationships and learn about character development, timing, and movement. Maximum enrollment: 12. Cost $600.

The Young Actor Prepares: As students grow in maturity and skill, they need to develop their acting technique with greater depth and skill. Special Interests
Musical Theatre: An intensive course in musical theatre, with the emphasis on classical American song from the period 1910-1960. Students will build repertory, explore acting choices in presenting songs and develop a musical revue of songs to be presented at the final class each semester. Private coaching is a vital part of this course. Limited to 8 students by audition. Cost: $600.

Stage Combat: A six week course of two-hour classes in the art of stage combat, introducing students to hand-to-hand, quarterstaff and pole exercises, then moving to rapier and dagger, broadsword and longsword. Students will learn the rudiments of fight choreography and the rules of performing safe combat on stage. Cost: $150 Stage Combat Ages 14-18 Session 1: Saturdays 1-3PM beg. Tap Dancing: Expand your acting horizons by learning the basic steps and routines which were glorified in early American vaudeville and which continue today in many Broadway musicals. The emphasis will be on style, rhythm, and movement. Previous tap experience not necessary. Students must furnish their own tap shoes. Intro to Lighting Techniques: The Studio has recently installed a new ETC Express computerized digital lighting system, similar to systems used in professional, community, and college theatres around the country. This system allows us to preset hundreds of cues and change from cue to cue with great flexibility. Learn how to operate this system and be up-to-date with the latest technology. In this class you will learn how to program and operate the new digital computer; how to cable, install lamps, and hang instruments; how to focus lighting instruments (Source Fours, Fresnels): and the basics of lighting design. Video Production: This exciting new class will teach students the basic elements of television and film production. The course will cover familiar genres such as ads, news clips, interviews, and documentaries, and will take advantage of Drama Studio actors and spaces for creating video pieces. For Children!
Creative Movement for Children: An introduction to choreography, dance, and theatre techniques developed specifically for the younger student. We will playfully explore different qualities of movement, basic dance vocabulary, and “moving stories.” From stretching, to skipping, to story theatre dancing, we will improvise and choreograph our own pieces. We’ll begin to develop theatre focus and an awareness of being in the moment and in our bodies, all essential skills for future classes in acting and dance at the Drama Studio. Cost: $300.
