Performance is a necessary part of the conservatory-style training at the Drama Studio.  Students need the opportunity of performing for audiences and putting into practice what they learn in the classroom. The Studio offers performance opportunities at several levels:

Sharings: At the conclusion of each semester, parents and friends are invited to the final classes of each course offered at the Studio. Students present excerpts of the work of the semester and have an opportunity for audience feedback. Sharings are “low-pressure” events but many students use the sharings to present work at a high performance level.

The Cabaret: Each May, the Studio presents six performances of student work in revue format, featuring monologues, scenes, dances, songs, or sword fights from classroom work of the past year. The Cabaret is presented for a paying audience and the level of performance is higher than that of the sharings. Students perform in at least two performances and have traditionally enjoyed full house audiences.

Productions: The Studio now presents full-length productions in October, December and March of each year, plus a Winter Shorts Festival in January and a June Shorts Festival in June. The Festivals feature short, one-act plays, many of which are written by our students. In addition, the Studio tours three short plays to Springfield Elementary Schools.  All plays are chosen which uplift the adolescent experience and any student is eligible to audition for a production. In the 2009-10 season, sixteen plays were produced.

Full-length plays are chosen to extend the training of our students, providing them with the opportunity to take part in a wide range of playwrights and performing styles. We have produced plays by such classical writers as Shakespeare, Moliere, and Aristophanes and dramatic adaptations of works by Dickens, Orwell, Chaucer, and Boccaccio. Contemporary dramatists have included Horton Foote, David Mamet, Tim Mason, Suzan Zeder, Constance Congdon, and Jeffrey Hatcher. Over 150 dramas, comedies, and musicals have been presented since our inception, many of which were premiered at the Studio.
